Major travel concerns ahead of the holiday weekend
WE ALL WANT TO COME HOME IN THIS SHOP WAS A LITTLE, YOU KNOW, JUST PUT A LITTLE ROUTE INTO OUR PLAN HERE, UNFORTUNATELY. BUT WE WILL SEE. SO THE BLOWING WIND AND THE BITTER COLD HERE AS WE GET CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS THIS WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES ARE IN SINGLE DIGITS. AND OURS ARE BELOW ZERO FOR MOST OF THE METRO AREA BY 5:00 AM. AND WE DON’T REALLY GET MUCH BACK TONIGHT. CLOUDS PACKING UP BUT WIND COLD WHICH WILL REMAIN BELOW ZERO THROUGH EARLY TOMORROW. SO WE WILL FINISH IN THE LOWER SINGLE DIGITS AS THE STARTING DAY ON WEDNESDAY. AGAIN TOMORROW IS THE FIRST ACTUALLY DAY OF THIS 3-4 DAY SYSTEM HERE. WE WILL BEGIN TO FEEL THE IMPACTS IN NORTHWEST IOWA. FIRST. THAT WILL COME IN THE MORNING. TEMPERATURES BEGIN HERE IN CENTRAL IOWA, AROUND 10 DEGREES. AND THEN IN THE AFTERNOON, WE GET INTO THE LOWER TWENTIES BY THE SECOND HALF OF THE DAY, TOMORROW, THAT’S WHEN THE SNOW STARTS HERE ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA. SO FIRST WE HAVE THE SNOW, THEN THE WIND AND THE COLD FOLLOWS RIGHT BEHIND THE WIND GUSTS ARE REALLY AT ITS PEAK HERE. ONCE WE ARRIVED EARLY THURSDAY MORNING AND THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. WE HAVE GUSTS BY THURSDAY, AROUND 9 AM, ABOVE 30 TO 35 MPH. THOSE NUMBERS ARE INCREASING AS WE GO IN THURSDAY MORNING OR THURSDAY NIGHT I MUST SAY. WE HAVE GUSTS OF AROUND 40 TO 50 MPH OVERNIGHT THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING. SO WE HAVE SOME VERY STRONG WINDS ATTACHED TO THIS STORM SYSTEM. AND WITH JUST A LITTLE SNOW ON THE GROUND, THAT CAN CREATE SOME COMPLICATED TRAVEL PROBLEMS HERE ACROSS THE STATE AND BEYOND. THE BIGGEST CONCERNS, THE IMPACTS HERE, THE SNOW, THE WIND AND ALSO THE DANGEROUS COLD. AGAIN, THE SNOW TOTALS ARE IN THE MEDIUM, IN THE APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 6 INCH RANGE, BUT MORE IMPACTS WILL BE FELT FROM THE OTHER PROBLEMS WE WILL SEE WITH THIS STORM SYSTEM. FROM OUR FORECAST IT LOOKS LIKE THESE CLOUDS WILL MOVE IN LATE TONIGHT, EARLY TOMORROW. THE SNOW ARRIVES HERE ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA AS EARLY AS MAYBE TWO OR 3:00. WE WILL BEGIN TO SEE THE SNOW FALLING. IT’S GOING TO GAIN INTENSITY BY TOMORROW NIGHT, RIGHT AROUND WORK TIME TOMORROW NIGHT. SNOW WILL FALL ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA. HE STAYS WITH US OVER WEDNESDAY NIGHT UNTIL EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. AND THEN I NOTICE SNOW SLIDES INTO EASTERN IOWA BY MID MORNING, NOON THURSDAY. SO THE SNOW WILL END AND WE WILL BE LEFT WITH COLDNESS AND VERY STRONG WIND GUSTS AS WE ENTER THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY. SO THE LATEST SNOW FORECAST HERE BASICALLY EVERYONE STATES HERE BETWEEN 3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW AND THIS IS WHERE MOST OF OUR MODELS ARE ALSO. ALONG WITH SNOW AND WIND, AGAIN WIND CHILL, THESE NUMBERS GET WORSE AS WE REACH THURSDAY MORNING. THIS AROUND 10 AM FEELING LIKE 30 TO 40 BELOW CERTAIN BY THE BEGINNING OF THURSDAY AND THE SAME CONDITIONS FRIDAY MORNING FEELING LIKE 35 BELOW ACROSS MUCH OF THE STATE, APPROACHING TOWARDS THE WEEKEND. SO TONIGHT’S FORECAST, WE’RE TALKING ONE-DIGIT THIS AFTERNOON. BY TOMORROW, AROUND 20 DEGREES OR SO ACROSS CENTRAL IOWA. AND THEN WE WILL REALLY GET HERE TOMORROW NIGHT WITH THIS STORM. WEATHER WARNING FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS HERE, REMAINS WINDY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. FRIDAY’S HIGHS REMAIN BELOW FREEZING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON HOURS. WIND SENSITIVE LIKE 30 TO 40 DEGREES BELOW ZERO AND MAYBE GETS A LITTLE BETTER BY SATURDAY IF YOU WANT TO CALL THAT BETTER. FIVE DEGREES TO HIGH ON CHRISTMAS EVE. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 12 SUNDAY FOR CHRISTMAS DAY. THINGS ARE HERE
