In its new explosive memories, “Spare”, Prince Harry reveals new details about Meghan Markle’s infamous fight with Kate Middleton over bridesmaid dresses for the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, wrote that the Princess of Wales texted his wife the week of their wedding about a “problem” with their daughter Princess Charlotte’s dress for the occasion.
The “French haute couture dresses” had been “sewn by hand based solely on [the bridesmaids’] measurements,” so it made sense that they would need some tweaking, Harry wrote of the tiny designs, which were bespoke by then Givenchy Creative Director Clare Waight KellerWho else created Markle’s wedding dress.
The 41-year-old Duchess of Sussex wrote back to Middleton, telling her to take Charlotte, now 7, to the palace, where a tailor was waiting to make arrangements for the six bridesmaids; according to Harry, this was “not enough” for the princess, who arranged a moment for the two to talk.
Charlotte’s dress was “too big and long and baggy,” Middleton reportedly told Markle, adding that the young woman “burst to tears when she tried it on.”
When Markle reiterated that Middleton should take Charlotte to the tailor to await alterations, Harry wrote, the princess told her that all the bridesmaid dresses needed to be completely redone with four days to go until the wedding.
According to the duke, Middleton also said that her own wedding dress designer, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, agreed with her assessment.
While the Princess of Wales eventually agreed to visit the tailor with Charlotte, Harry wrote, she later found Markle crying “on the floor” after the altercation. The next day, it continued, Middleton apologized and brought flowers and a card.
Inside Harry’s new memories
Harry’s recap of the ordeal expands on what Markle shared during the Sussexes bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021; While it was widely reported that Markle had made Middleton cry before her wedding, it was revealed at the time that “the opposite was true.”
“I don’t think it’s fair for her to go into detail because she apologized and I’ve forgiven her,” the Duchess of Sussex told Winfrey.
Clearly, her husband isn’t afraid to risk it all.
