A YouTuber has put Apple’s claims about the durability of the apple watch ultra put it to the test by taking it against a drop test, a nail jar, and repeated blows with a hammer to test the sapphire crystal that protects the screen.

techrax, a popular channel for testing product durability, first tested the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ by dropping it from around four feet. The ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ was left with almost no scratches aside from a few minor dents along the titanium case. Then the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ was mixed in a jar of nails and once again left with no visible markings.

TechRax also tested the durability of the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ sapphire crystal display cover by hitting it repeatedly with a hammer. In testing, the watch withstood repeated hammer blows until it finally cracked, and only after the table sustained some damage first.

While the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ screen was initially undamaged, the watch did not turn on after repeated bumps. A misfire could indicate that while the sapphire may not have broken to begin with, some internal components may have been damaged. Of course, the test is unrealistic in representing a typical ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ use case, but it may give some customers peace of mind about the strength of the sapphire crystal display cover.

Apple claims that the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ is its most rugged, durable, and extreme Apple Watch yet, and it appears poised to compete directly with Garmin. In response to the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌, Garmin said so measures battery life in “months” and not “hours”. The ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ is priced at $799 and started rolling out to customers on Friday.
